Who Are You, Really? Uncovering Your True Identity Beyond Your Job Title

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself the fundamental question: "Who am I?"

If you have, you probably noticed how difficult it is to find a straightforward answer. From the moment we are born, we are handed narratives about who we should be, who we need to be for others, and what society expects of us.

Over time, these external expectations pile up like junk on top of our true selves. We begin defining our identity by what we do rather than who we are.

The Eulogy Exercise: Looking Beyond What You "Do"

During the first semester of my Master of Social Work (MSW) program, I took a course on Death and Dying. Our final project was an unexpected exercise: we had to write our own eulogy.

At first, it sounded morbid. But a eulogy is powerful because it is the final summary of your life—the story of who you were when everything else is stripped away.

When preparing your own eulogy, you have to look past everyday titles:

  • "I'm a hairdresser." (No, that's just a job.)

  • "I'm a coach and self-discovery guide." (That’s a role, not your core.)

  • "I'm a musician." (That’s an outlet, not your essence.)

When you strip away your profession, your hobbies, and the societal roles you play, what is left?

Finding the Core Threads of Your Identity

When I sat down to do this exercise and stripped away the external titles, I discovered four foundational core threads that define who I truly am underneath it all:

  1. Curiosity – A deep drive to learn, question, and understand.

  2. Exploratory Nature – A passion for venturing into the unknown, emotionally and mentally.

  3. Connection – A genuine love for connecting deeply with others.

  4. Creativity – An inherent need to express and build.

These four threads run through everything I do—whether I am cutting hair, coaching clients, or making music. They are not what I do; they are who I am.

How to Start Uncovering Your True Self

If you feel buried under societal pressure or confused about your identity, try this reflection exercise:

  1. List Your Roles: Write down all your current roles (job title, family role, social status).

  2. Strip Them Away: Imagine a scenario where those titles no longer exist.

  3. Identify the Underlying Traits: What qualities remain? Are you empathetic, resilient, analytical, expressive, or grounded?

  4. Find the Common Thread: How do these core qualities show up across different areas of your life?
