The Ultimate Trio: If You Had to Give Up Love, Money, or Sex, Which One Goes?

We’ve all been asked classic "would you rather" questions. Usually, they're lighthearted, silly, or altogether impossible. But recently, I was posed with a question so profound that it stopped me completely in my tracks. It’s a question that gets right to the core of the human experience and how we seek alignment in our daily lives.
Imagine this scenario: Money, love, and sex are laid out right in front of you. You are allowed to keep two, but you must permanently let go of one.
Which one do you walk away from?
When I first heard this, my immediate reaction was a fascinating battle between my body and my mind. As a transformational life coach and integrationist, I've spent years studying human behavior, and this exercise perfectly highlights how our priorities shift depending on where we are in our personal journey.
Here is how I broke down this ultimate conundrum—and what your answer might reveal about your own life alignment.
1. Why "Sex" is Non-Negotiable (It's Not Just Physical)
For me, letting go of sex was an instant, resounding no.
But it’s not for the reason you might think. This isn't just about physical gratification or the act itself. When we look at sex through a holistic, psychological lens, we realize it has the unique power to engage multiple thresholds of the human experience simultaneously:
Biological & Physiological: It is wired into our DNA and our nervous system.
Psychological: It builds profound intimacy, vulnerability, and mental connection.
Spiritual: At its highest expression, it acts as a bridge to a deeper state of consciousness and oneness with another person.
Because sex holds the potential to satisfy us across all four of these vital human dimensions, the loss of that potential is simply too great to let go.
2. The Wealth of Love vs. The Power of Money
When the question settled deeper, my body instantly reacted to love. My internal response was: Love is the most important thing of all. Ditch the money! Who cares about it?
If you knew me years ago, you'd know that this response represents a massive internal shift. In the past, I was incredibly driven by business, work, and financial success. I likely would have protected the money first.
But as we grow, evolve, and experience the highs and lows of life, our definition of "wealth" changes.
"The true wealth that love brings—the raw experience of being able to genuinely give and receive love—is infinitely more valuable than any bank account."
For anyone who has had money and lost it, or had none and gained it, you quickly realize that money is entirely incapable of buying the emotional security, joy, and peace that love freely provides.
3. The Modern Dilemma: The Reality of Money
This is where the mind steps in to complicate things. While my heart wanted to ditch the money to keep love and sex, my mind immediately raised a red flag.
In the society we live in, we have to have money.
Without it, we face severe suffering. We can't meet our basic physiological needs—food, shelter, safety, and health. I have experienced times of financial scarcity myself, and I work with many people who are actively struggling. The stress of not being able to meet your basic survival needs can quickly choke out the joy of love and the peace required for intimacy.
And therein lies the massive conundrum.
Finding Your Alignment: What Does Your Choice Say About You?
Ultimately, this exercise isn't actually about finding a "correct" answer. There isn't one. Instead, it serves as a powerful tool for self-discovery.
Your answer to this question acts as a mirror, reflecting:
Where you currently are in your life experience. (Are you in survival mode, or are you looking to deepen your spiritual connections?)
Which areas of your life are currently out of balance.
How you are getting your most basic human needs met.
In a perfect world, we seek a beautiful, integrated balance of all three. We strive to secure our financial foundations, cultivate deep, loving relationships, and enjoy vibrant physical and spiritual intimacy.
If you find yourself struggling to balance these areas, or if you feel a disconnect between what your mind wants and what your body is telling you, you don't have to navigate it alone. Through intentional integration, we can align your outer life with your truest inner values.
What About You?
If you had to let go of one, would it be love, sex, or money? Or do you believe a truly fulfilling life requires an equal balance of all three?
