The Power of Unseen Connections: Reconnecting with Your Community

Have you ever been so excited to see someone you haven’t seen in years, only to be met with that exact same, intense level of excitement in return?

Take a moment to think about that. What does that feel like in your body?

For me, it’s one of the most joyous, love-filled, and grounding feelings in the world. It’s a physical reminder of why we do what we do, and how deeply our lives are intertwined with the people we meet along the way.

I recently experienced this in the most overwhelming, beautiful way during a trip back to Wisconsin.

Returning to Where It All Began

During this tour, I had the chance to reconnect with a dear friend and long-time client whom I first met back in 1999 at William John Salon—the very first salon I ever worked at.

When I let her know I was coming to town, she made it clear: "If you come, you'd better cut my hair!"

I laughed and told her she’d have to help me find a space to do it. So, she went back to that first salon, spoke with the owners, and asked if we could set up a chair for a day.

What started as a simple request to cut one friend's hair exploded into something spectacular.

The owners met us with incredible enthusiasm. They were so excited to host me that a single appointment quickly turned into two full days, cutting hair for 16 amazing people—clients and friends I love to death and hadn't seen in years.

Realizing the Strength of Shared Growth

For two straight days, I was completely bombarded with pure, unmatched enthusiasm.

We spent hours catching up, sharing stories, and reflecting on how much we've all grown. When you don't see people for a few years, stepping back into their lives is like holding up a mirror to your own evolution. You get to see:

  • How we've grown as individuals.

  • Who we've become over the last few years.

  • The major milestones that have shaped our lives.

It made me realize just how vital these lifelines are. We often get caught up in the day-to-day grind, but it’s the human connections that anchor us.

"You don't have to be present to maintain strength and connection."

I’ve talked about this concept in previous videos, but this trip proved it to be undeniably true. Time and physical distance are powerless against genuine bonds. When the foundation is built on mutual respect, love, and creativity, you can pick up right where you left off—no matter how many years have passed.

Moving Forward with Gratitude

Having this kind of community in a place I used to live—and being able to return to those roots and feel that immediate warmth—is a gift I don't take for granted.

After those beautiful two days in the salon, I’m spending time with my family before heading back to connect with even more incredible people I haven't seen in ages.

To everyone who came out, squeezed in for a haircut, or just stopped by to say hello: Thank you.

I am overflowing with gratitude and love. You've reminded me of the beautiful thread that connects us all, near or far.

How do you maintain your long-distance connections? Have you had a recent reunion that filled your cup?
