The Power of Revisiting Your Past: Why We Should Walk Your Old Routes

Have you ever taken a moment to truly stop and reflect on how much you’ve changed?

I just got back from an incredible trip, and I am filled with so much gratitude for the people I got to see and spend time with. But beyond the great company, this trip gave me a unique opportunity to reflect.

I found myself asking: What do I see in myself today that is different from the person I was when I lived in Madison, Wisconsin?

Reflection is a beautiful tool. It gives us a conscious understanding of what’s going on in our lives, how our feelings about past situations have evolved, and what we might want to intentionally change about our week or our future.

While I was away, I had a fascinating experience that reminded me just how powerful looking back can be—and it’s something I highly recommend you try, too.

Walking in the Shoes of Who I Used to Be

During my trip, I decided to take a walk through the old neighborhood I used to live in before I moved.

When the pandemic hit back in 2020, I started walking a couple of different routes every single morning, depending on how much time I had. I’d also walk them during the day on my days off.

Revisiting those exact same streets four years later was profound. It was fascinating to see myself walking in my old shoes—the shoes of the person I used to be.

As I walked, I became intensely aware of all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I carried back then:

  • The confusion about the future.

  • The internal struggles I was fighting.

  • The constant contemplation about what was happening to my life at that exact moment.

But then, a powerful realization hit me.

"It’s All Gone"

As I stood on those familiar streets, I realized: It is all gone.

I am not that person anymore. The things I was so deeply concerned about, the situations that brought me stress, and even some of the people I was constantly thinking about—they aren’t in my life anymore.

When I was talking about this experience with a friend later, they asked me, "Wasn't it hard to go back to that space and feel all of that old stuff again?"

I thought about it and said, "You know, I didn’t really look at it like that. I just saw that it was over. And I am here now."

Why You Should Visit Your Old Spaces

It is amazing to look back and be reminded of the joy, of course. But it is equally amazing to see the challenges, the struggles, and the difficulties of your past and realize they are no longer there.

If you have the chance, I highly recommend finding the spaces you used to spend time in and walking them once in a while.

Go back to your old neighborhoods, your old parks, or the routes you used to take when life felt heavy. Walk them with the perspective you have today. Use it as a physical milestone to map your emotional growth.

See how you’ve changed. You might just surprise yourself by how far you’ve come.

How do you practice reflection in your daily life? Have you ever revisited a place from your past and realized how much you've grown?
