The Fine Art of Trusting Others (and Knowing When to Walk Away)

How do you know when you truly trust someone?

It sounds like a simple question, but when you break it down, it’s one of the most complex aspects of human connection. In any new relationship—whether personal, professional, or romantic—you eventually face a choice:

  1. Extend trust up front, maintaining it until they give you a reason not to.

  2. Withhold trust completely, observing their behavior over time until trust is earned.

Neither path is entirely easy. Choosing not to trust right away can feel deeply uncomfortable—it requires us to be vulnerable and put ourselves out there without a safety net. But on the flip side, how much of yourself should you give before you truly know who someone is?

Navigating trust is an essential part of self-discovery, relational awareness, and personal growth. Let’s explore how to build authentic connection while staying grounded in self-trust.

1. Do Their Words Match Their Actions?

Trust isn’t built in a single moment; it’s cultivated through time and observation. One of the most reliable ways to gauge trustworthiness is simply paying attention:

  • Listen to their words: What promises are they making? What values do they claim to hold?

  • Watch their actions: How do they treat you and others when things are easy? How about when things get stressful?

  • Look for alignment: Are their actions consistent with what they say, or is there a gap between their narrative and their behavior?

When words and actions consistently match over time, trust naturally begins to take root.

2. Listen to Your Body’s Signals

Mindfulness isn't just about mental clarity; it’s about physical awareness. Your body is constantly collecting subtle cues from your environment and relationships.

When you are around this person, take a moment to check in with yourself:

  • Does my body feel relaxed and settled, or tense and guarded?

  • Do I feel safe to express myself authentically?

  • Is there a quiet, uneasy feeling in my gut that something is off, even if everything seems fine on the surface?

Learning to tune into these somatic signals gives you valuable feedback long before your conscious mind can articulate what's happening.

3. Recognizing Red Flags and Setting Boundaries

Because our past experiences shape how we navigate relationships, trust looks a little different for everyone. What one person easily overlooks might be a major red flag for someone else.

The critical question is: What happens when you notice something that feels wrong?

  • Can you identify the red flags when they appear?

  • Can you communicate your concerns openly and honestly?

  • Are you able to discuss boundaries without fear of retaliation or invalidation?

Ultimately, a healthy relationship leaves room for honest conversations. If expressing a boundary causes conflict or resistance, it provides key information about the viability of that connection.

4. Trusting Others Starts with Trusting Yourself

The foundation of trusting anyone else is self-trust.

Why? Because when you trust yourself, you know that no matter what happens—even if someone betrays your trust or proves to be unreliable—you have your own back.

Self-trust means knowing that:

  • You will honor your own feelings and intuitive insights.

  • You can speak up when a boundary is crossed.

  • You have the strength to walk away and cut ties if the relationship no longer serves your well-being.

When you know you are capable of honoring yourself and leaving situations that aren't right, the fear of trusting others begins to dissolve.

Questions for Reflection

As you navigate your own relationships, consider these questions:

  1. What does it take for you to feel safe trusting someone new?

  2. Do your trust thresholds change depending on the type of relationship (e.g., romantic, professional, friendship) or how long you've known them?

  3. When you spot a red flag or feel an intuitive shift, how do you typically respond—do you address it, minimize it, or retreat?

  4. How strong is your level of self-trust when it comes to holding firm boundaries?
