Do You Give People the Version of You That They Earned?

"Do you give people the version of you that they earned?"

When I first heard that, my mind was blown. Why haven't I thought of it that way before?

Let’s talk about intentional relationships, matching energies, and why treating people according to what they earn isn't petty—it’s an act of self-respect.

The Two Sides of the Relationship Mirror

Think about how you show up in your day-to-day relationships. When you view your interactions through the lens of what people have earned, your energy management suddenly makes a lot more sense.

  • The Positive Loop: If someone shows up for you with respect, kindness, and sincerity, they have earned the most grateful, appreciative, and loving version of you. They bring joy, so you pile it right back onto them.

  • The Defensive Loop: On the flip side, if someone decides to act like a jerk or treat you with disrespect, why are you still giving them your best self? If they choose to act out, then the boundary-focused, distant version of you is exactly what they’ve earned.

Why do so many of us give people more than they earn? Why do we spend our valuable time and emotional energy trying to accommodate people who are disrespecting us left and right?

Setting Boundaries is an Act of Self-Responsibility

When we continue to give our best energy to people who mistreat us, we teach them that their behavior has no consequences. More importantly, we drain ourselves of the energy we should be saving for the people who actually value us.

Matching someone's energy—or giving them the version of you they've earned—isn't about revenge. It's about responsibility to ourselves.

If you show up with love and joy, I am going to pile that love right back onto you the next time I see you. But if you show up with toxicity, you don't get access to my peace anymore. You get the version of me that holds a firm, immovable line.

Protecting Your Energy

The next time you feel drained by a relationship or frustrated by how someone is treating you, take a step back and ask yourself:

  • What version of me have they actually earned right now?

  • Am I over-delivering to someone who is under-respecting me?

Give people exactly what they earn. It’s one of the most powerful things you can do for your personal growth and mental well-being.

What about you? Have you been giving away a version of yourself to people who haven't earned it? How can you start protecting your energy today?

Watch the short here.
