Beyond the "Sum of 5 People": Why Your Communities Shape Your Transformation

We’ve all heard Jim Rohn’s famous adage: "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with."
It’s a powerful perspective on personal growth and alignment. But as we evolve and our worlds broaden, does that concept still hold up in its traditional form?
Recently, while reflecting on a deep and restorative trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, I realized that this classic rule of thumb needs an upgrade. We aren't just the average of five individual people—we are the sum of the five communities we actively choose to inhabit.
Key Takeaways
Expand Your Lens: Moving from individual relationships to community ecosystems enriches your worldview.
Reflective Self-Discovery: Intergenerational and diverse communities allow you to see yourself through new, empowering perspectives.
Intentional Alignment: Auditing where you spend your time ensures your social connections nourish rather than drain you.
The Big Island Reflection: Intergenerational Connection
During a recent week on the Big Island of Hawaii, I had the privilege of sharing deep, intentional time with three friends. Across our group, we spanned three generations with a 42-year age gap between the youngest and oldest.
We shared meals, walked the beaches, and simply existed together. Sharing space across such a wide spectrum of life experiences revealed something crucial:
When you spend time with people across different age groups, backgrounds, professions, and cultures, you see yourself through completely different eyes. You learn about new places, digest new perspectives, and ultimately gain a clearer, richer understanding of who you are.
"The people we surround ourselves with have a profound impact on how we are, who we are, and why we are the way we are." — Tony Santini
From 5 Individuals to 5 Communities
In our interconnected world, limiting your influence to just five individual friends can unintentionally narrow your vision. Expanding this to five key communities allows for far greater growth and alignment.
A "community" isn't just a physical neighborhood; it can be:
Generational groups that offer wisdom or fresh perspectives.
Creative or professional circles that stretch your goals.
Wellness or spiritual communities that ground your daily practices.
Cultural or global groups that broaden your world view.
When you intentionally engage with distinct communities, you create a diverse ecosystem that supports your personal transformation.
An Audit for Personal Alignment: Ask Yourself These Questions
To evaluate if the communities and people surrounding you are supporting your authentic journey, take a moment to reflect on these four questions:
Are you being rewarded? Do you receive positive energy, growth, and fulfillment from the people you spend time with?
Are you acting out of obligation? Do you feel genuinely excited to engage, or are you spending time purely out of duty?
How much time do you actually need? What is the sweet spot of time spent with each community to feel truly nourished?
Is the impact positive? Are these environments encouraging you to step into your authentic self?
Designing Your Life Around Alignment
Self-discovery is an ongoing process of tuning in to what nourishes your soul and letting go of what creates friction. By becoming conscious of what you are gaining—and giving—within your communities, you gain the clarity needed to create meaningful, lasting change.
